Remarkable Nyenrode

Oct 10, 2011

In 1946, a number of major Dutch companies decided to set up Nyenrode: an institute designed to groom an ambitious generation for a career in business. The prime objective was to train new captains of industry, who would ensure the post-war reconstruction of the Netherlands. Now, 65 years later, the world is a very different place. And yet Nyenrode still turns out annual batches of enterprising and passionate people: remarkable people who dedicate themselves to equally remarkable companies.

To celebrate this milestone, a large-scale anniversary celebration dubbed 'Remarkable Nyenrode' was organized for 3 September 2011. The concept involved setting up marquees, stages and stands right across the estate that surrounds Nyenrode Castle, along the lines of the De Parade and Het Preuvenemint open-air festivals but with a recognisable Nyenrode twist. The acts were performed by professionals and Nyenrodians. The guests were told to: "Wander around and enjoy, meet, take part, experience, sing, dance, laugh, cry and celebrate!"

After a festive opening, the guests were given time to explore the terrain. Some 1,400 people wandered around, enjoying the acts, performances, culinary treats and the outstanding weather. Many of the acts were performed by Nyenrodians. There were dozens of stands including one serving a special Nyenrode anniversary beer, a speed-coach session run by two former students, a racing car and race simulator from the Rally Committee, a casino run by the Ten Lange Leste debating society, whisky tasting by the Interim Management Circle, create your own artwork by the Bijoux ladies’ debating society, a romantic trip on the moat in pedaloes belonging to a former Nyenrodian, marvellous stands run by the Golf and Polo Circles, a mini-theatre featuring stand-up comedians from Luctor debating society, etcetera.

In addition to all this, Boom Chicago performed an interactive comedy show and there were performances by hilarious Parade orchestras, soothsayers and illusionists. During the evening, the main podium was graced by artistes including Ali B, Johnny & the Gangsters of Love and Xander de Buisonjé. The Nyenrode Booz Band, a group of talented former students specially convened for the evening, took care of the grand finale.

Throughout the evening, the beautifully illuminated Nyenrode Castle, brightly coloured stands and huge Fountain Bar formed a stunning background for this spectacular event. The party continued into the early hours in the Coach House.

So in the words of many of the guests, this remarkable 65th anniversary party can go down in history as the best anniversary party ever!
